Inquiry into Strategies to Reduce Assaults in Public Places in Victoria

Terms of Reference

Received from the Legislative Council on 29 July 2009 under section 33 of the Parliamentary Committees Act 2003.

To the Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee – for inquiry, consideration and report on
Strategies to reduce crime against the person in Victoria and, in particular — 

  1. the level, nature and incidence of crimes against the person in Victoria and the trends in recent years
  2. the impact of these crimes on vulnerable groups, migrants, overseas students and the elderly
  3. strategies to address these crimes and reduce their incidence and increase the apprehension and conviction of offenders
  4. the role of community policing and local community organisations, and
  5. the level of police resources in Victoria and their distribution throughout the State,
and to report by 30 August 2010.

Note that for this inquiry, the Committee has decided to focus on assaults occurring in public places, in particular:

  • the impact of assaults on vulnerable groups;
  • the role of community policing and local community organisations in reducing assaults;
  • strategies to address these crimes, to reduce their incidence and increase the apprehension and conviction of offenders.
