Youth Parliament 30 years young
The YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament has celebrated its 30th anniversary in Queen’s Hall.
At the event hosted by the Victorian Parliament and its Presiding Officers, participants in this year’s program were joined by YMCA’s volunteer organisers and Youth Parliament alumni.
In her welcome address, the 2016 Youth Governor Caitlin Meyer (pictured above) reflected on the strength of the Youth Parliament community, both within Victoria and in similar programs around the world.
Since 1987, more than 3000 Victorians have taken part in the intensive program of workshops and debates, which provides first-hand experience of the parliamentary process and a platform for young people to raise issues with their MPs.
This year’s youth parliamentarians are currently tackling a diverse range of issues and have passed legislation addressing the need for subsidised student transport, mental health education in schools and improved drug rehabilitation services in regional communities.
Regular news updates from the 2016 Youth Parliament are being produced by a team of young reporters and are available at the YMCA Press Gallery website.
