Victoria joins project to support new Fiji Parliament


The Victorian Parliament is providing technical assistance to the new Fiji Parliament under an initiative supported by the Australian Government.

The two year project, part of a package of measures announced by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop during her visit to Fiji last week, will involve a range of professional development activities to support the Fiji Parliament, its MPs and staff.

Writs issued for Victorian state election

At 6pm on Tuesday 4 November 2014 the writs were issued for the Victorian state election, bringing to an end the 57th Parliament.

The state election will be held on Saturday 29 November 2014, with 88 Legislative Assembly seats and 40 Legislative Council seats to be contested.

German Speaker visits Melbourne

President of the German Bundestag, Professor Norbert Lammert, has visited Melbourne as part of an official parliamentary delegation to Australia.

Dr Lammert was welcomed to the Victorian Parliament by Speaker Christine Fyffe and Legislative Council President Bruce Atkinson.

Retiring Members of Parliament bid farewell

Twenty-four Members of the Victorian Parliament have delivered their valedictory speeches as they retire ahead of the November state election. This included 16 Members of the Legislative Assembly and 8 Members of the Legislative Council.

Schools’ Constitutional Convention held at Parliament House

More than 80 senior secondary students from across Victoria have taken their seats in the Legislative Assembly for the 2014 Schools' State Constitutional Convention.

Opened by Parliamentary Secretary for Education Clem Newton-Brown and chaired by Speaker Christine Fyffe, the convention provides students with opportunities to explore contemporary political and social issues, promotes student understanding of the Australian system of government and demonstrates how the Australian Constitution provides the framework for our democracy.
