Member Moorabbin roads board 1863, chairman 1867, 1868; speculated in land and floated the Thomas Bent Land Company in 1888; lost heavily during financial crisis; took up farming Port Fairy 1894-1900. KCMG 1908.Mayor Brighton on many occasions, also chairman Moorabbin Municipal Council, in some years simultaneously.
