Arrived Melbourne from NSW 1849; lived Fitzroy; to E.Brighton where he worked in father's market garden; c1860 owned his own; rate collector Brighton 1861-1873. Member Moorabbin roads board 1863, chairman 1867, 1868; speculated in land and floated the Thomas Bent Land Company in 1888; lost heavily during financial crisis; took up farming Port Fairy 1894-1900. KCMG 1908.

Mayor Brighton on many occasions, also chairman Moorabbin Municipal Council, in some years simultaneously.
