Question on Notice

Ms Sandell to ask the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change — What Government grants or other support are available to support neighbourhood scale battery development in Victoria.

Answer
Answered: 11 January 2022

The Andrews Labor Government has provided unprecedented support to clean energy – creating thousands of new jobs, driving down power prices and cutting our carbon emissions. We’ve set nation-leading targets of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and committed to halving our emissions by 2030 as we work towards net zero by 2050.

Thanks to our ambitious clean energy agenda, we’ve created more jobs than any other jurisdiction in the country and slashed our State’s carbon emission.

Through our nation-leading Solar Homes program, we’ve revolutionised access to solar power – helping families who would otherwise have never considered putting a power station on their roof. We’re also the nation’s leader in battery technologies – successfully supporting batteries from the utility scale right down to the household scale.

As part of our unprecedented $1.6 billion clean energy package, we are providing significant support to help deliver more batteries at the neighbourhood scale, with more than $10 million through the Neighbourhood Battery Initiative (NBI) to unlock this technology for Victorians.

In August 2021, I was proud to announce the first round of projects through the NBI, with more than $3 million being provided to 16 projects to fund pilots and demonstrations of a range of neighbourhood-scale battery ownership and operational models.  These are being delivered by community energy groups, local governments, distribution businesses, retailers and other groups.

This initiative is just another example of how the Andrews Labor Government is delivering the transition to renewable energy while creating jobs, delivering fairness and bringing the whole community along with us.
