Answer - 13 February 2024

I thank the Member for the Northern Metropolitan region for their question.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing manages public housing and transitional housing at several sites along Alamein Avenue, Ashburton, as listed below:

1 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  none occupied

(b)  eight unoccupied

3 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  none occupied

(b)  four unoccupied

5 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  five occupied

(b)  three unoccupied

7 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  three occupied

(b)  five unoccupied

9 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  two occupied

(b)  six unoccupied

47 Alamein Ave (block of units)

(a)  four occupied

(b)  none unoccupied

On 5 August 2023, a fire event occurred at 1 Alamein Ave, Ashburton, causing significant damage. Renters occupying these units were displaced to temporary accommodation and transferred to alternative public housing.

The properties at 1-9 Alamein Ave, Ashburton have been identified as a site for redevelopment by the department’s local office and Homes Victoria. The department has been offering alternative public housing accommodation to renters who still occupy these units, in preparedness of the site redevelopment.  The department will continue attempts to relocate renters from these properties as the site will need to be vacant before any major works occur.  The units at 47 Alamein Ave, Ashburton are not included in the redevelopment plans.
