Constituency Questions No 1141

Constituency Question

Mr Hamer to ask the Minister for Transport Infrastructure for the Minister for Roads — My constituency question is for the attention of the Minister for Roads in the other place, and I ask: what is the latest information that the minister can provide on planning works for the Hawthorn to Box Hill cycling corridor? Local bike groups and residents were thrilled when the Andrews Labor government announced $370 000 to plan for a new path between Box Hill and Hawthorn. This early funding will mean an eventual link between Ringwood and Hawthorn. It will make a real difference for my community and others in the east. I know the hardworking member for Hawthorn shares my enthusiasm for this future path. As a lifelong user of alternative modes of transport, the member for Hawthorn no doubt has a particular interest in seeing this link get built in the future.

I would like to thank the minister for the commitment that she has shown to cycling infrastructure right across Victoria, and I look forward to her response.

As part of the Box Hill to Hawthorn Strategic Cycling Corridor feasibility study, the Department of Transport (DoT) will collect data, identify key problems, undertake technical investigations and options analysis to determine the most appropriate treatments for cyclists along the corridor.

A Communications & Engagement Plan will also be developed to guide consultation with key stakeholders, which could include, but not limited to, the cities of Boroondara and Whitehorse, Level Crossing Removal Project, VicTrack, Bicycle Network and local bicycle user groups.

DoT is currently undertaking preparation work and will soon commence development and consultation on the project. DoT expects this feasibility study to be completed by late 2020.
