Legistrative Council E-Petitions

E-petition Number
101
Title
Non-lethal devices for self-defence
Grievance
The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council the urgent need to enshrine the purchase, ownership and use of non-lethal de-escalation and self-defence devices in Victorian law so that women, vulnerable minorities and all members of the community of good repute that wish to carry them may do so.
In the first 43 days of 2019, Australia has seen 27 innocent people killed at the hands of violent offenders. It is a national disgrace. Victorians want non-lethal self-defence devices.
We are frustrated and tired of standing by while our sisters are violently assaulted, raped and murdered by sadistic predators, both strangers and known to her, that are often stronger, and more experienced.
We are fed up that our brothers go out at night and never return home again because they have been needlessly bashed or stabbed to death by violent thugs.
We want agency to take our safety into our own hands. We need to even up the odds when facing imminent violent confrontations with one or multiple attackers. We do not want to attend another vigil for victims that were not allowed options to defend themselves better. We want non-lethal self-defence devices.
Action
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to take immediate action and amend the relevant laws so that citizens are permitted to buy, carry and use non-lethal devices for self-defence.
