The petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that public transport should be free. It would be close to a net neutral for the Government to make public transport free including by removing the $1.7 billion dollars paid to American company Conduent, together with the wages of authorised officers and all other ticketing costs. Making public transport free will remove cars from the road helping people and the environment. It is proven to benefit many cities around the world where public transport has been made free. Removing the costs and enforcement of ticketing will result in a neutral cost to the Victorian taxpayer. The only people being fined are workers who already pay tax for government services or those too poor to afford it.
The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to make all public transport free.
