Parliament House hosted a morning tea in Queen’s Hall to mark International Day of People with Disability (IDPwP).

About 70 people, including parliamentary staff and representatives of peak bodies attended.

Consultants from disability support organisation Scope provided an update on the parliamentary precinct’s work to gain Communication Access Symbol accreditation.

“There is an unmet need for people who have a communication difficulty or disability to access the right formal communication assistance,” Lisa Ho said.

“This, among other factors, has implications for employment and other community engagement.”

In Australia one in seven, or 1.2 million people have a communication disability. In Victoria, this is one in 194 people.

Lisa and Ashana Wicks are helping to equip staff in several parliamentary departments with the tools and communication skills they need to provide respectful and responsive service to all customers.

Former VFLW footballer Elise Muller also gave a lively presentation about their experience with autism.
