Justice mid inquiry update
17 December 2021 Criminal justice system inquiry website
The Committee examining Victoria’s criminal justice system has provided an update on its inquiry.
Key themes and priorities have emerged as the Legislative Council Legal and Social Issues Committee considers its report for Parliament, due in March 2022.
The inquiry has received 166 submissions and held eight days of public hearings involving dozens of witness organisations and individuals.
Committee Chair Fiona Patten and Deputy Chair Tien Kieu have provided an update on the progress of the inquiry which was launched in Wangaratta, in April 2021.
It was tasked with analysing the factors influencing Victoria’s growing remand and prison populations and strategies to reduce rates of criminal recidivism.
The Committee has consulted widely with legal bodies, advocacy groups, government agencies and Victoria Police.
