Surgical treatments for gender affirmation

Legislative Council 60 Parliament First Session
1476: Questions on Notice
MOIRA DEEMING — To ask the Minister for Mental Health (for the Minister for Health):

Has the Royal Children’s Hospital ever provided or referred children to surgical treatments for gender affirmation, and if so —

(a)  what was the time period where the provision and/or referral for gender affirmation surgeries occurred; and

(b)  why did the provision and/or referral for gender affirmation surgeries cease.

Answer - 16 July 2024

The Royal Children’s Hospital does not provide gender affirming surgery to trans and gender diverse children or adolescents.

In line with the Australian standards of care and treatment guidelines for transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents and World Professional Association for Transgender Health Treatment Guidelines’ standards of care, where clinical need is determined, RCH clinicians may refer adolescents to a private specialist clinician to consider the appropriateness and need for surgery.

The RCH has been consistent in this approach over time.
