Government ministry
Ministers are government members chosen by the Premier and their party to take on extra responsibilities. Ministers are drawn from both Houses and are responsible for one or more policy areas, known as portfolios. Ministers form the Cabinet and are responsible to Parliament for their portfolio areas and are responsible for the government department relevant to their portfolio. Ministers often have more than one portfolio.

Shadow ministers are members of the Opposition who have responsibility for one or more policy areas, known as portfolios. Shadow ministers scrutinise the policies and actions of the corresponding minister and are the Opposition’s main spokespeople on those topics. They also present alternative ideas and policies about their portfolio area.
