Privacy collection notice - visitors to Parliament House

Purpose and application

The Parliament of Victoria and the parliamentary departments are committed to protecting your privacy. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) (PDP Act) and other relevant legislation.

When we refer to “us” or “we”, we mean each of the parliamentary departments under section 7 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005, being the Department of the Legislative Council, the Department of the Legislative Assembly, and the Department of Parliamentary Services.  Together, the parliamentary departments provide support, infrastructure and professional services that enable the work of the Parliament of Victoria.

This privacy collection notice applies to your visit to Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct. It explains what personal information is collected when you visit Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct. Definitions

The terms personal information, sensitive information and health information have the same meanings as in our Privacy Policy. In this collection notice, any reference to personal information is also a reference to health information and sensitive information unless otherwise stated.

Information we collect when you visit Parliament House

We collect personal information from individuals who visit Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct to attend a tour, use our catering facilities, attend an event, watch the proceedings of the two houses or committee hearings in the public galleries. This may include your name, address and a copy of one of the following forms of identification:

  • driver's licence or permits
  • proof of age card
  • passport
  • Australian birth certificate
  • Australian citizenship certificate.

CCTV operates throughout Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct, including in the public galleries. Your personal information may be collected in the form of footage or images recorded by video and camera surveillance systems.

We do not usually collect sensitive information or health information. However, we may collect it if you are involved in a security or safety incident during your visit to Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct.

Why we collect your information

We collect your personal information to facilitate your entry and visit to Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct, and for safety and security purposes.

If you are found to be in breach of the conditions of entry, you will be asked to leave the parliamentary precinct and may be prohibited from returning for a period determined by the Presiding Officers under the Parliamentary Precincts Act 2001.

Anonymity

If you prefer not to provide us with this information, we may be unable to facilitate to your access and visit to Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct.

Virtual tours of Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct are available on the Parliament of Victoria website. Committee hearings and proceedings of the two Houses are also live streamed via the Parliament of Victoria website. Who we share your information with

Your personal information may be used by and disclosed to employees or contractors of the parliamentary departments who are required to use it in the course of performing their duties.

Personal information may be used by a third party visitor management system to assist us in facilitating your visit to the Parliament of Victoria.

We do not otherwise share personal information about individual visitors with any organisation or person outside of the parliamentary departments unless in the event of a security incident requiring the involvement of Victoria Police for law enforcement purposes, or as otherwise required by law.

We will not use the personal information we collect from you for direct marketing of products or services.

You may choose to subscribe to updates from the Parliament of Victoria.

Data security

We store and handle your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy, the Victorian Protective Data Security Framework and standards, and relevant privacy legislation. Your personal information is only accessible to those employees or contractors of the parliamentary departments who are required to use it in the course of performing their duties.

We take reasonable steps to destroy, delete or permanently de-identify personal information where it is no longer required for any purpose, and in accordance with relevant record-keeping, retention and disposal requirements under the Public Records Act 1973.

For visitors to Parliament House and the parliamentary precinct, this means that we ordinarily delete your personal information within 12 months of your visit.

Access and correction

You may request access to, or correction of, your personal information which is in our possession in accordance with our Privacy Policy. If you wish to do so please contact us at PrivacyOfficer@parliament.vic.gov.au.
