Question on Notice
Mr Bull (Gippsland East) to ask the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change — At page 60 in the overview section of the 2022–23 Victorian Budget Papers it states the Government will provide '$28 million for investments in eucalyptus seed collection … that will support forest contractors and ensure that forests can be reseeded after major fires.' It has been reported more than 4.5 tonnes of eucalypt seed was spread last year to regenerate fire-affected forests, of which three tonnes came from VicForests’ reserve. I am advised that if seed collection is not ramped up in the next two years to capture seed from the last flowering event, the opportunity will be lost to replenish Victoria’s seed bank until the next flowering event in 12 years’ time. I am also advised the areas of seed crop that can be harvested from state forests are limited, however the quantity of seed could be tripled if contractors were given access to seed trees in National Parks.
(1) Can the Minsiter guarantee that this investment in eucalyptus seed collection will fully replenish both the VicForests’ and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning contingency reserves.
(2) Will collection be permitted in National Parks to achieve this objective.
