Civic walk: East Melbourne
Make the most of your visit to Parliament House and take your class beyond Spring Street.
There are many monuments and statues in the area around Parliament House that commemorate events and people significant to the people of Victoria, from Pastor Sir Douglas and Lady Gladys Nicholls to the Victorian Emergency Services memorial and the Great Petition sculpture. Teachers and students are encouraged to explore how and what we commemorate, how the commemorated events and people have contributed to Victoria, and what opportunities there may be for inclusivity and diversity.
The locations in this civics walk have been selected for their relevance to Parliament of Victoria and/or their connection to civics and citizenship. The walk starts at Parliament House, makes a loop around the back of parliament to the Treasury Gardens, before finishing back at Parliament House. There are many more monuments and places of significance in the area as well as throughout Melbourne.
