Teaching of civics education in the classroom will be boosted with a new education blog on the Victorian Parliament’s website.

Developed and produced by education specialists working in parliament’s community engagement team, the blog provides a range of information to support teachers in delivering the civics and citizenship curriculum.

‘Through this blog we’re bringing to teachers stories and insights that move civics beyond the textbook,’ says Dr Narelle Wood, parliament’s education adviser.

‘We’re keen to connect parliament with teachers and support them in their important work so that students have agency to make decisions and take actions about issues that are important to their lives.’

Teacher professional development opportunities feature in a refreshed parliament education program.

One feature of the blog is a regular update about what’s happening in parliament. There are also ideas for the classroom and stories from behind the scenes.

‘The blog provides opportunities to highlight the relevance of civics education and to make it meaningful for both teachers and students,’ Dr Wood says.

It’s part of a comprehensive Teach and learn section on the Victorian Parliament’s website that includes new resources and links to professional development programs for teachers.
