Afghan Independence Day

Afghan Independence Day

Dr KIEU (South Eastern Metropolitan) (13:01): In recent weeks the community has celebrated Indian Independence Day and Pakistan Independence Day, and on 19 August it was Afghan Independence Day. The day was difficult this year, considering the country’s current political state. However, the Victorian Afghan community still celebrated their 103rd in the south-east at Springvale town hall. The event was reflective, and the fall of Kabul reminded me so much of the fall of Saigon, which I lived through as a young boy. My heart goes out to the community. Australia has a moral and humanitarian obligation to accept more Afghan refugees.
